Combine Things!
Some of the most influential people were known for more than one thing. Think about it. Literally think about any great person ever, and you will find that they perfectly combined two or more of their interests.
Was Muhammad Ali known just for boxing? No.
He occupied the space between boxing, motivation and philosophy.
Was Bruce Lee known for just martial arts? No.
He combined it with films & philosophy. He is known for his fighting skills, movies and interesting insights.
What was true for these men applies even better to us today.
Most people ask “what stories should I tell? And I answer, everything!! That’s what makes you human and we always want to connect with humans.
We are generalist by nature. We are interested in so many things, we want to do so many things - and that’s ok. You have only one life and you should be able to pursue whatever you want.
But, I don’t even have to say this. The digital age is forcing us all to take interests in so many other things.
We’ve all become photographers and writers dabbling in digital design and social media strategy. These things have become important for communication and connecting in today’s world so we’ve learned them.
Looking back, my storytelling journey online began with book reviews and photography. I was the guy who read a lot, reviewed books, dabbled in photography and was also a school teacher. Upon reflection, it was this combination that brought me my first 2000 audience.
Let me tell you something: the human person is broad and deep. We have immense depth and massive potential to do so many things. We know this and are naturally drawn to those who show this breadth and depth in their work.
Although we try to box people in our everyday life, we are drawn to those with multiple interests.
So do not be afraid to show every aspect of your personality and every aspect of the things you love. Don’t do one thing. Don’t specialize.
What are your interests? Post in the comment below, let’s discuss how you can merge them into a strong personal brand!
