Doing Nothing Never Works

One principle I learned a long time ago–maybe about 12 years now–is that passivity is a dangerous position to take. Doing nothing is akin to regressing!

Keep a glass of clean water on your desk without stirring it for a few days, it becomes stale and unsafe.

Let a white fence stay for too long without maintenance, it begins to turn black.

In all these examples, the problem occurs not because anything wrong is done to the objects, but because nothing at all is done.

Sometimes, all you need is to do nothing to bring everything crumbling down.

The same principle applies to us as human beings. Are you actively building the character and principles you need as a man or woman who is driven by a purpose or are you simply doing nothing?

I remember some bible parables such as the 10 virgins, the talents and even the fig tree.

You can argue in each of these stories that they all did nothing wrong. And you would be right!

But the problem is, they did nothing. And that was the fault in each of these stories.

In the April 30, 2023 edition of Seth Godin's newsletter, he shared a free book, Drift. I read it and thought it beautifully discussed the same message I am trying so hard to communicate today. Read it here for free with the password “friend”.

I'll end with this:

Be hot. Be cold. But do not be Lukewarm.

Doing nothing is safe. But doing nothing hardly works!
