Ideas don’t matter
I can write two newsletters every week because I have built two disciplines around them.
I write every morning
I read every night before I go to bed
These habits are based on two principles I learned from "Deep Work", a book by Carl Newport.
To thrive in the new economy, you must:
Always be learning
Always be producing
So, I keep learning something new every night through the books I read and I keep producing something every morning through the essays and short notes I write.
You mustn’t read + write every day like I do. But you need to have a system that ensures you’re always learning and producing.
In an age where technology is accelerating exponentially, things will keep changing and in order to be the top of your field, you must keep learning. But most importantly, you need to bring your new ideas into the world.
The thing is, everyone has ideas and they don’t matter if you don’t execute them.
Ideas are not special.
Making them happen - that’s special.
There was a time in 2020 where everyone seemed to be bursting with new ideas. Every new week, there's a message saying:
“I have this new idea...”
Of course you do, everyone has new ideas.
Do you know how many people had the idea for Uber before it became a reality? Hundreds.
But it doesn’t matter.
As you learn and get the new ideas you must append with actually producing and executing on something. Through your ideas bring something valuable into the world.
And please don’t look for someone to validate your ideas. Don’t send someone a message saying, “I have this idea”.
Personally, I would prefer reading a message saying:
Here’s something I produced
Here’s something I published
Here’s something I put in the world.
Ideas are plentiful. What you do is what matters.
